COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) — Upgrades are underway to improve the Muscogee County Jail and save taxpayers a few bucks.
The sheriff’s office announced a new medical provider for the jail on Monday, April 4.
Muscogee County Sheriff Greg Countryman told News Leader 9 that a new contract with Wellpath, a Tennessee-based healthcare provider, will provide medical and dental coverage as well as the implementation of an electronic medical record system for prison patients.
The sheriff added that the group is able to provide most of the same services as a hospital, making it a one-stop-shop for treatment.
He says it will also benefit taxpayers’ pockets.
“He wants to raise the standard of care,” Laura Busbin said with Wellpath. “He wants to take good care of the patients in prison and that’s something Wellpath is focused on.”
“It will reduce our medical costs if we go out and we can have those services provided here inside,” Sheriff Countryman said. “In the long term, it’s a five-year contract. Over the next five years, this will reduce outside medical costs.
The sheriff adds that he is working to improve conditions in the jail. He recently improved food service at the facility after receiving complaints from inmates.
He tells us he plans to continue making improvements to the Muscogee County Jail.
