Is the Great Lakes Mall in Mentor rebounding from filing for bankruptcy?

Sterling M. Wilson January 27, 2022

MENTOR, Ohio (WOIO) — Months ago it was unclear if the Great Lakes Mall would still be standing due to its financial situation.

“There is always an effort from the city, the Great Lakes Mall, private developers to revitalize it,” said Kevin Malecek, director of economic development and international trade for the city of Mentor.

The Washinton Prime Group owns the Great Lakes Shopping Center.

He filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

However, the mall is now on the rebound, according to Malecek.

“There is a reorganization happening in companies. They were able to get out of it, reorganize their portfolio. And they came out not only stronger at the Great Lakes Mall, but otherwise,” Malecek said.

The retail industry is an evolving industry that has forced shopping center owners to change and adjust the way they do business.

This includes presenting an exhibition and an interactive Instagram museum.

“You’ve seen kind of a transition where they want to bring more people into the types of experiential experiences that exist. As I mention WonderCleveland, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and I think you’re going to have a lot more stuff like that at the mall to attract people,” Malecek said.

On top of that they added additional retail stores like Rose & Remington.

“You’ve got Dick’s, JCPenny, Dillards, they’re doing really well,” Malecek said.

Washington Prime Group Statement:

“Great Lakes Mall has had great success securing exciting new tenants like Rose & Remington, Wonder Cleveland and Asian Mart, and has a long history of encouraging and helping local entrepreneurs grow into successful businesses. These new additions are just a few examples of the Great Lakes Mall’s commitment to creating a mall for the community where customers can shop and enjoy a variety of modern dining options and events and entertainment. attractive activities.
